About Fox Islands Electric Cooperative
Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, Inc. (FIEC) is a 501(c)(12) member-owned, nonprofit cooperative created by the North Haven and Vinalhaven communities in 1975 with a loan from the USDA Rural Utilities Service.
Beginning with infrastructure purchased from investor-owned utility Vinalhaven Light & Power Co., FIEC installed a 35 kV submarine transmission line to provide reliable power generated on the mainland to the islands.
The Fox Islands added renewable energy beginning in 2008 when the members of FIEC voted 98.7% in favor of developing a wind power project to serve the Fox Islands. The resulting generating facility, owned and operated by Fox Islands Wind (a wholly-owned subsidiary of FIEC), is a three-turbine, 4.5 MW onshore wind farm that serves the remote island community 11 miles off the coast of Maine.
By forming a member-owned, nonprofit, rural electrification utility, the Fox Islands community began its path to energy independence - a journey that continues today.
